Cubs continue search for manager

Here’s a quick update on the Cubs search for manager, also known as Phase 2 of the offseason to-do list:

  • Pete Mackanin, Dale Svuem, Mike Maddux and Sandy Alomar Jr have all gone through the interview process.

  • Current Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux seemed to make the best impression during his mock press conference and he also shared the fact that he “despises” the song Go Cubs Go.

  • There has been talk that Milwaukee Brewers bench coach Dale Svuem has been contacted for a second interview.

  • Supposedly, Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale has been in contact with the Epstein/Hoyer team and most likely had a brief interview over the phone.

  • Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona has announced he will be taking the 2012 season off after being rejected for the St. Louis Cardinals managing spot.  Fans who wanted to avoid the Cubs becoming the Red Sox B-team can silently commend the decision.  I didn’t want Francona to manage because I believed he would be mentally exhausted from the antics of the 2011 season.  It looks like he will be taking a break for that exact same reason as he said he needs time to “re-energize”.

  • Ryne Sandberg was pre-empted out of the Cubs managing spot and was later turned down for the Cardinals position.  Cubs fan rejoice for the latter!  Ryno will most likely return to a Minor League position.

  • Although Svuem is rumored for a second interview, it seems like the popular notion is that Mike Maddux will team up with his brother Greg to form what I like to call the Mario & Luigi Managing Team.  Greg would assume the pitching coach position and the role of Mario despite his lower job title.  His Hall of Fame career earns him the right as Mario

  • Going out on a limb,  it’s looking like the next manager of the Chicago Cubs will either be Mike Maddux or Dale Svuem.   As stated before, Mike Maddux could include his brother, Greg.  Could Dale Svuem as manager sway Prince Fielder to come to the Northside?

Who do you want as the next manager of the Cubs?  Let me know in the comments section.
